Tissue Box Challenge - Art Caddy

JDaniel4'sMom is hosting a Tissue Box Challenge for the Earth day. The idea is to reuse a tissue box in a fun way with your kids.Well so far I have used tissue box in these ways :

• To store plastic bags. Just fold the plastic bags and put them inside the box. When you need a bag you can pull it out through the top.
• I cut them up(especially the ones with nice designs) to make Gift tags.
• Use them as separators in drawers. Just cut the top part and its ready to use.
• Use them as sorters while playing with toy animals sorting them into farm/wild/pet etc..

For the challenge putti made this Art Caddy!!

Well, i really did not know what to make so just asked putti if she wants to decorate the box. She said 'Sure, lets put stickers'. That would have been fun too but I was sure we were running short of stickers at home. And also wanted something recycly ;) So used up our scrap tissue pieces and glued them all over the box. This was enterily done by putti. Oh how she loves playing with glue :)
After the box was done decorating, we wondered what can be stored in it. And all those colored tissues made me think of colorful crayons. And we poured our crayons into it, but putti had some difficulty picking up a crayon through the small opening so i cut opened the top part partially.

I think this can be used to store putti's collectibles - stones/shells/ twigs/small pinecones..

Paint chip tree, flowers and earth

Here are the Paint Chip Tree, Flowers and Earth that Putti made. 

After seeing the beautiful paint chip collages at The chocolate muffin tree, I was inspired to pull out my collection of paintchips for putti to play. Putti loved sorting them into color groups - greens, yellows, reds etc. And then, putti cut all the greens into pieces as she wanted to make a Tree.

Then she glued them all onto a cereal box cardboard in the shape of a tree. And thanks for the tip(at chocolate muffin tree) to hold the pieces down and count to ten as the paint chips curl when u apply glue. It was fun counting. Putti counted in english, kannada and spanish too yay!!                

Punched a hole and tied some thread and hung it.

  Putti loved this activity so much, that she went on with it and made some flowers too.

 And with all these recycling craft work, I asked her if she would love to make an earth for the earth day. She loved the idea and went ahead to make it.

Birthday banner !!

We decided its art party for putti this time, but i was wondering where to get art theme deco items from? And later thought i should involve putti to make one herself, that would be fun. We have made a board for her art wall earlier. I decided to work on same lines.
So first i tore off a few pages from our telephone mini directory and asked putti to paint them. I wanted her to use all the colors, but she was very adamant that day and wanted only 'orange'. And towards the end she did agree to paint them yellow!
While these were drying, she wrote the various alphabets on a white paper. Later i cut the alphabets. We then glued these alphabets onto the colored papers, punched holes and threaded them all.

Three bears!!

Amongst the books we borrowed from library this time. Putti loved the 'the three bears' story. We made a little art activity to go with it. First i offered a green paper to her and asked her to draw 'forest'. She asked for paints and when when i gave her crayons she picked up markers. You can see the markers, colored pencils and crayons and some paper are always ready on her table for her to enjoy! 

 

While she was busy with the 'forest', i cut out the bear parts for her. 

She later had lots of fun glueing them together!!

Delightful Deepavali...

Deepavali this year was very delightful. This is a quick wrap up post of all the beautiful festive things we did enjoy. Clicking on each link to take you to original post with more photos.

Diya cookies, which I made not for the festival, but before that. This was for the kids who were practising the dance for our Indian association cultural festival. The song was 'Happy Diwali' and hence i made these cookies to go with the theme of the song. 

 

Clay and Flour diyas, made by me painted by putti.

Diya Wreath, which was cut out off putti's paintings. My idea was to use them as a table centre piece or toran, but putti wanted to make a wreath.

Paper Lantern...

Many families make Akash Butti (a colorful basket with a little lamp) and hang it in front of their doors for deepawali. I have heard stories of how my mother used to make them as a kid herself with her friends. But have not seen much of them myself.
I saw these paper lanterns at a chinese stall in the ’Asian festival' in our town. Putti did make a couple there that day. It seemed easy enough to try again. Here is what we made

Paper Diya Lamps Garland...

We made these Paper Diya Lamps for Diwali. I was planning on placing them on the table like a center piece on the day of festival like this. 

  

Here is how we made these paper diya lamps:

1. I cut some half circles out of copy paper and let Putti color/ paint them however she liked it.
2. I also let her paint one whole page yellow. Could use yellow construction paper too.
3. Then I cut the painted yellow paper into little tear shapes.
4. Glued each tear shape onto the top of half circles.
5. Added small red/orange flame on the yellow tear shapes.
6. Our paper diya lamps were ready!

Taped some of these onto a long piece of string to make a garland!

Putti insisted we make a wreath too.

Five little pumkins..

 ’Five little pumpkins' made at school

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate. 

The first one said "Oh my! it's getting late!". 

The second one said "There're bats in the air". 

The third one said "But we don't care". 

The fourth one said "Lets run, and run, and run".

The fifth one said "isnt Halloween fun?"

 oooh oooh went the wind, 

And out went the lights,

Halloween spiders and ghosts

Another simple Halloween deco..

1. First trace your child's foot on a white paper. Do not trace the fingers.
2. Cut the traced foot outline and add eyes and mouth to your lil' ghosts.
3. Next for the spiders, fold a piece of black paper in half and trace your child's hand on it.
4. Cut the traced hands except for the thumb.
5. Add eyes and mouth to your spiders.
6. Then place them all on Clear Con-tact paper and stick it to the window to display!

Cardboard Pizza....

We made this Cardboardbox pizza inspired by this post  on Filth Wizardry. I cut the pizza wedges from cereal box and wrapped it in brown paper. Later cut various toppings and cheese. Added a bit of red paint to glue and gave putti that to glue all of her toppings on the pizza slices.

Shredded Paper Nest...

Here is a simple nest that we made using shredded paper. For now an Easter egg is inside the nest.

1. Wrap cereal bowl or any bowl in plastic wrap(saran wrap). 
2. Then apply glue and water mixture(mixed 1:1) all over the inside walls of the bowl.
3. Put some shredded paper into the bowl and press it against wall.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until most of the bowl is covered leaving a little space in center for the egg.
5. Allow it to dry overnight.
6. Remove it slowly from the bowl and the nest is ready.

Play with Leaves!

Putti and her dad loves to spend time in our little patio garden. They read books, have story times and even share a snack sitting there amidst the plants. 

Putti picks up leaves, sticks and flowers on our daily walks. And many a times, I give her a little tape and ask her to stick and make a collage. Here's what she come up with..

And I did this one day fro her and explained her the parts of a tree/plant.
