It is customary to place the baby in cradle along with some ceremonies on the 11th day of birth. And my mother-in-law had asked us to finish off 'Naming Ceremony' too as it was not sure when we might be able to take the little one to India for the actual ceremony. The name 'Sahitya' has already been entered and registered in all hospital records and birth certificate. Being born in 'Hasta' star like her granddad (my father), her name was supposed to begin with 'Pu' so we chose 'Putti' which will be her petname too!
First we write the name on a tray filled with rice using a golde finger ring as pen. Then tell out her name in her ears three times. Later on for the cradle ceremony, we decorated the swing as we donot have cradle. And then Amma (my mother) told me first a big round rock has to be placed in it. I beleive it could have been to test out the safety of the cradle. We replaced that with a cucumber here;) Then placed my friend's daughter in it for a couple of minutes and finally placed Putti in it and sang lullaby for her. She has been happily sleeping in it.
