Pista Shells Mosaic Earth

This Earth Mosaic was made using empty Pistachio Shells.

Putti loves eating Nuts and Pistachio is one of her favorite. She loves cracking opening the shells and eating. I do save the empty shells and she often glues them on card stock or cereal box to make some abstract Pista Shell Artwork, simple letters and flowers too.
Last week, when she was gluing some again, I asked her if she would like to make an Earth this time. I told her she could do it just like she did 'Playdough Earth Mosaics'. She first painted a blue circle on a white cardstock. After the paint dried, she glued some empty pista shells over it randomly. Then painted them green. For older kids you can print out a world map and they can glue pista shells onto the continents.

As always, she wanted to make another one, but did not want to wait for the paint to dry, so I gave a her a blue card stock. She glued the empty shells to cover the entire circle. And then painted parts of it blue and green. She now knows very well, that there's loads of water and very little land on our Earth!

Playdough Earth Day Mosaics

The EARTH Book by Todd Parr includes a lot of easy ideas on how we all can work together to make the Earth better - from planting a tree, using both sides of the paper, turning off the faucet while brushing teeth and reusing old things in new ways. Many of these are already being in practice in our house. As shared earlier, we have been trying to adapt an Eco-friendly life style and have tried to introduce the same with Putti. More on it in my previous post "Everyday an Earth Day". Here is the video of the author reading the book.

For the book activity, Putti wanted to make 'The Earth' and I wanted to use some recycled stuff. So went through our recycling box and found I had lots of dried blue and green Play-Doh. We started with - Elmer's School Glue, bits of dried playdough (lots of blue and little of green) and a blue card stock. I used a round plate to trace a circle on the card stock and Putti cut it out. 

 Then, Putti glued the playdough pieces randomly all over the card stock. As she glued I kept telling her that there is lots of water (blue) and just a little land (green) on Earth. After she finished gluing, I encouraged her to paint a coat of glue all over it for extra sealing as we have done earlier with play dough mosaics. 

Just like all other activities, Putti wanted to make another Earth. But, I had ran out of all blue playdough bits. So, asked her to paint a cardstock blue for water and then she glued the remaining green play dough pieces for land. I love the feel on this one, making it look like the waters are deep and the land part is risen!

And after having made 2 earths, Putti wanted to make one more the next day. This time, I had no option but to give her fresh play dough. She loved pinching small bits from play dough and pressing then onto the card stock. The softer play dough sort of blend into each other very well.

For older kids you can print out a world map and they can glue pieces of playdough to make continents.

Tissue Box Challenge - Art Caddy

JDaniel4'sMom is hosting a Tissue Box Challenge for the Earth day. The idea is to reuse a tissue box in a fun way with your kids.Well so far I have used tissue box in these ways :

• To store plastic bags. Just fold the plastic bags and put them inside the box. When you need a bag you can pull it out through the top.
• I cut them up(especially the ones with nice designs) to make Gift tags.
• Use them as separators in drawers. Just cut the top part and its ready to use.
• Use them as sorters while playing with toy animals sorting them into farm/wild/pet etc..

For the challenge putti made this Art Caddy!!

Well, i really did not know what to make so just asked putti if she wants to decorate the box. She said 'Sure, lets put stickers'. That would have been fun too but I was sure we were running short of stickers at home. And also wanted something recycly ;) So used up our scrap tissue pieces and glued them all over the box. This was enterily done by putti. Oh how she loves playing with glue :)
After the box was done decorating, we wondered what can be stored in it. And all those colored tissues made me think of colorful crayons. And we poured our crayons into it, but putti had some difficulty picking up a crayon through the small opening so i cut opened the top part partially.

I think this can be used to store putti's collectibles - stones/shells/ twigs/small pinecones..

Paint chip tree, flowers and earth

Here are the Paint Chip Tree, Flowers and Earth that Putti made. 

After seeing the beautiful paint chip collages at The chocolate muffin tree, I was inspired to pull out my collection of paintchips for putti to play. Putti loved sorting them into color groups - greens, yellows, reds etc. And then, putti cut all the greens into pieces as she wanted to make a Tree.

Then she glued them all onto a cereal box cardboard in the shape of a tree. And thanks for the tip(at chocolate muffin tree) to hold the pieces down and count to ten as the paint chips curl when u apply glue. It was fun counting. Putti counted in english, kannada and spanish too yay!!                

Punched a hole and tied some thread and hung it.

  Putti loved this activity so much, that she went on with it and made some flowers too.

 And with all these recycling craft work, I asked her if she would love to make an earth for the earth day. She loved the idea and went ahead to make it.
