5- A-Day Book Challenge - Week 9

The 5 books Putti picked for this week are :
  • One Rainy Day by Tammi Salzano is a colorfully illustrated book which is about a Duck who loves a rainy day because it brings out the colors in his world. This is a great way to introduce little ones to objects and colors on rainy day.
  • The Digging-est Dog by Al Perkins is abot Duke the dog who lived in a Pet store and does not know how to dig. Soon he learns it gets carried away with enthusiasm and dugs up the whole town making people angry. And then realises his mistake and asks for forgiveness. The rhyme, rhythm and illustrations are great!
  • That's not my Puppy
  • Caillou: Who Lives in the Forest  is a lift the flap book. Putti loves it tolift them and learn interesting things about the animals that live in the forest. What do you call a baby deer? Where does the beaver live? What do heron tracks look like?

The Foolish Tortoise is about a tortoise that decides one day that he is tired of being slow. He takes off his shell, in the hope to move fast. Soon he discovers that he misses his shell for: shelter, shade, and safety. He also realizes that he will never be fast, and when he finds his shell again, he gladly climbs back inside.

5 a day books

Kate at An Amazing Child is hosting a blogging event this week to celebrate the birthday of Eric Carle on 25th June. We are glad to be part of it. Kate has planned a whole week long activities about his books. There will be many other wonderful bloggers writing about his books, doing art activities and play ideas to go with his books! So come back as there will be more people adding in until saturday.

This week's our 5-a-Day Books are all Eric Carle stories!
First is Eric Carle’s most famous and well-loved book- The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book has been a favorite with Putti ever since the first time I read it to her. She loves poking her fingers through the holes in the food and is amazed with the long list of food that the caterpillar eats on Saturday! It is the first book she learnt to read all by herself. She has known the book by heart for more than couple of months now, yet never gets bored with it. We both love reading it !!
The Grouchy Ladybug
The Grouchy Ladybug is the story of a grouchy ladybug who is looking for fight, challenges everyone it meets regardless of their size. I also love that the book takes the ladybug through her day hour by hour with little illustrated clocks on top of each page. This is putti's favorite part of the book and she points to the clock, reads the time and then the story..
This was the first book putti asked me to get her. She was introduced to it at her preschool. Appealing animals in bold colors are seen and named in a rhyming question-and-response text that delights as it invites young readers and listeners to participate actively.

The Tiny Seed
The book talks about the life cycle of plants, as one tiny seed which faces many challenges, grows into an enormous sunflower, which then produces more seeds in its turn. The book introduces the seasons and the role of the weather in seed germination. And ultimately tells of the importance of just the right environment in order for a plant to grow.

Have You Seen My Cat?   [HAVE YOU SEEN MY CAT-BOARD] [Board Books]
Have you seen my cat?
A little boy’s beloved pet cat has disappeared and he goes out to find it. In his search he meets many people who try to help him and he meets different kinds of cats, both wild and domesticated, before he finally discovers his own cat,

Do you have a post about Eric Carle's books, any activities related to it? Please add your link below. Take time to visit all the wonderful blogs listed to get inspired !!!

Creating Indoor Forests for Forest Fiesta !!!

June 5th was World Environment Day and The United Nations has chosen "Forests: Nature at your Service" as the theme for the 2011.
Rashmie at Mommy Labs is hosting a creative play party for kids called Forest Fiesta and invited us to be part of it. Putti loves to watch BBC's Planet Earth videos. She loves the stories facts that Hemanth tells her about forests, animals, ocean etc. And she had a great time creating her own forest.
Temperature is hitting 100°F daily, the ☼ and the humidity outside is too much to make this outdoor. So putti filled the container with dirt and then we took it inside to create the forest.
Planting the trees from her collection of plant twigs and sticks...
It wasn't standing stable as our soil wasnt too deep, so had to snap the twigs short..
And then restoring animals to their natural habitat !
Putti put all of the plant twigs into one tray forest and sticks in the other. And when I asked her why the 'Trees' in the second forest tray did not have any leaves on them? I was hoping she would say 'Fall or winter', but she surprised me and said "Amma, its because forest fire has burnt the leaves down". She had seen huge clouds of smoke while we were driving back from Tampa last weekend and had asked loads of questions and I had shown her some videos on youtube!!

So that's the Aftermath of Forest Fire for you here below :
I wanted to add a watering hole for the animals, so got the lake out from her 'Zoo playset' and she went onto add her big tree. Now that completed our forest setting and she was ready to play !!
See the alligator trying to catch the cow(bcos we dont have wildebeest) who came to drink water....
And here, the horse(in her right hand) is being attacked by a Lion ...
The struggle continued for long.... And finally horse gave away :(
See the remains of horse lying behind the lion? Also she added some shelter for the Lion and its cub :)
She enjoyed the whole process and the play which continued for long.

Dont forget to check out the linky at the bottom of this post.  You'll find various forest activities by children from around the world !!!

You can participate even if you don't have a blog, by sharing your idea on facebook at Mommy Labs page here or my page here.

5 a day books

The last two weeks has been very hectic with lots of things going on and also we were travelling on and off. So have not been able to make a blog post about our books. I had picked some of the books from our previous weeks, so that made it very easy to read while on the move.
Well now for the books chosen for this week:

Lots of  Dots by Craig Frazier encourages young readers to look closely at the world around them. Buttons are dots. Wheels are dots. Ladybugs have dots. And so do the fried eggs on your plate. Lots of Dots is lots of fun!

Toddlerobics by Zita Newcome is a great book for movement, movement and movement!!! There hello, good byes, rubbing noes and lots more. Excellent illustrations, catchy rhymes and fun animal motions make this a very interactive book

4 Pups and a Worm by Eric Seltzer is a fantastic book. The rhymes are fun and the illustrations do not fail to entertain. Watching these animals save the day over and over is a delight.

Eat your Peas This is a clever book that will turn an all-too-familiar situation of the battle between parents and children when it comes to trying different foods on its ears. The dialogue between Daisy and her mother will cause kids to giggle. A fun book with bright, simple illustrations that will keep kids interested.

Mitchell is Moving is about Mitchell, the dinosaur who is tired of living in the same old place and decides to move. His best friend Margo isn't happy about that at all. She thinks of some ways to try and keep Mitchell as her neighbor. The story is cute.

Painting with Yarn !!

This is one activity that I remember doing it as a kid. These are so much fun to make and you never know what will come out of it, no two will be the same !!
You will need :
  • White paper
  • Any paint (we used crayola washable paint) in a small container
  • Pieces of wool/yarn (around 15-20" for each color of paint)
  • clothes pins
  • Newspaper to cover your workspace
Fold the paper in half, then open it back up and lay it flat. Next tie one end of the wool/ yarn to a clothes pin. Have the child take the piece of yarn/wool and dip it in the paint leaving the end tied to clothes pin free of paint to hold on to. You don't need a lot of paint, just to make the yarn stained.
Next lay the paint covered yarn/wool on one side of the folded paper in any pattern, leaving the clean end of the yarn out so you can hold on to it.
Then fold the paper back together and put your hand on the paper, hold down with little pressure so you can feel the wool through the paper and begin pulling the yarn out of the paper. You may want to hold the paper down for little kids while they pull the wool. (Ignore the prints on the paper, we use a lot of one side printed paper for artwork)
Open up the paper and oooooh laaaa a beautiful creation!
You need not dip the yarn in paint each time, the second and third prints look beautiful too !!
To make a larger one, put the paint dipped  yarn on paper and then cover it with another paper and repeat the process..

Each one so unique and beautiful !!
Next we tried another method, where in after laying the paint dipped yarn/wool on paper and folding it back, we rubbed the paper from top to bottom. (NO PULLING the wool here)

And opened the paper to revel our work of art...

But putti loved the pull method very much and did not want to make this. Guess I should have let her try this method first and then the pull method. Maybe we will do that next time.

And be ready to make lots!! Putti made loads of these...
