Delightful Deepavali...

Deepavali this year was very delightful. This is a quick wrap up post of all the beautiful festive things we did enjoy. Clicking on each link to take you to original post with more photos.

Table Center...

 

Diya cookies, which I made not for the festival, but before that. This was for the kids who were practising the dance for our Indian association cultural festival. The song was 'Happy Diwali' and hence i made these cookies to go with the theme of the song. 

 

Clay and Flour diyas, made by me painted by putti.

Diya Wreath, which was cut out off putti's paintings. My idea was to use them as a table centre piece or toran, but putti wanted to make a wreath.

   

Paper Lanterns that adorned the doorway, made by putti with little help from me:)

Putti's First Stage Show !!

Putti loves dancing just like most other kids! The Indian Association in our city organises a cultural festival every year called 'Glimpses of India'. And this year Putti wanted to take part too. She enjoyed the practise sessions really well. It is a song called 'Happy Diwali' from the hindi movie 'home Delivery' Here is the video clipping of her dance.

Reading a book about Diwali !!

Putti loves to pick her own books when we visit library. I usually browse the library website and place a hold for books I need. And do the same for Putti too depending on the theme in their school.
Since Diwali is right ahead, I looked if there are any books for it and found "Lighting a Lamp: A Diwali Story (Festival Time)".

Putti has loved it ever since we got it home. Here is she reading/ looking at the book...

Paper Lantern...

Many families make Akash Butti (a colorful basket with a little lamp) and hang it in front of their doors for deepawali. I have heard stories of how my mother used to make them as a kid herself with her friends. But have not seen much of them myself.
I saw these paper lanterns at a chinese stall in the ’Asian festival' in our town. Putti did make a couple there that day. It seemed easy enough to try again. Here is what we made

Paper Diya Lamps Garland...

We made these Paper Diya Lamps for Diwali. I was planning on placing them on the table like a center piece on the day of festival like this. 

  

Here is how we made these paper diya lamps:

1. I cut some half circles out of copy paper and let Putti color/ paint them however she liked it.
2. I also let her paint one whole page yellow. Could use yellow construction paper too.
3. Then I cut the painted yellow paper into little tear shapes.
4. Glued each tear shape onto the top of half circles.
5. Added small red/orange flame on the yellow tear shapes.
6. Our paper diya lamps were ready!

Taped some of these onto a long piece of string to make a garland!

Putti insisted we make a wreath too.

DIY Clay Lamps for Deepavali!

We made these beautiful Clay lamps for upcoming Diwali Festival !!

Like last year diwali I was planning on making some play doh candle holders for Deepavali. But then decided to try my hands with air dry clay. I first rolled flat a small round disc and them tried to cup it by placing it inside my hands. Pinched and pulled the edges to form some designs. Also used straws and flori pasta to make some hole and flower imprints. For the leaf shape, rolled out an oval and cut the edges using a crinkle cut knife. Later let it dry over small cup to get it curved.

And because air dry clay was hard for Putti's little hands, I made some salt dough and she made these. Used straws to make some designs on them.

After they all dried well, we started to paint them. Oh she did love painting them all.

I then added some fine details in paint!

Play Doh Diya(Candle Holders) for Deepavali 2009

Deepavali, the Hindu festival of lights was on weekend this time and that really made a lot of difference to the festivities. It gave me more time to cook an elaborate festive spread and spend more time decorating the house. I also made some simple pinch bowl candle holders using playdoh.
