To make your own Diwali scratch art, you will need:

  • Scratch Art Paper
  • Wood stylus or wooden dowel, tooth pick, back of a paint brush
  • Stencils- I got mine from ItsyBitsy (optional)
We love Scratch Art a lot, it excites Putti as she sees the various colors magically appearing when she scratches through the black paper. We go through a lot of these sheets, we have made Scratch Art Valentines and also for Easter CardsI buy these sheets from Amazon, Oriental trading and the dollar section of Target. We have been happy with all of them. It is not very messy except for some scratched off black paint, so perfect for play dates and parties. Thus, when Putti had her friend over recently she pulled these out again. After the girls made a couple of flowers, butterflies etc , I couldn't help steer the girls to make some diwali designs especially with Diwali around the corner. So we first looked through a lot of Diwali images on google and talked about all things signifying the celebrations and the girls got to work.

They drew fireworks- crackers, flowerpots, rockets etc, diya (lamps), swastik and more.

Then, I showed how they can draw a diya by making a half circle and adding a tear drop over it for the flame. They, then decorated it as they liked it.

And, as luck would have it later in the day, we received a parcel from my mother who sent us lots of goodies for Diwali. It also had these stencils from Itsy Bitsy. Love my amma!!

The girls wanted to try them out and got to the scratching fun again. I used a small piece of tape to hold the stencil to the scratch art sheet.

Aren't the results lovely? I can't wait to try to do more with these stencils with Putti.
